Spend a Day Bird Watching at Busse Woods

Elk Grove Village has a wide range of attractions and activities to offer residents of Willow Crossing Apartments. If you enjoy bird watching, then make a trip to Busse Woods! Whether a longtime birder or an aspiring naturalist, you will love this nearby preserve.

About Busse Woods

Busse Woods, which is also known as the Ned Brown Preserve, sits on more than 3,500 acres of meadows, prairies, woodlands, and shoreline around Busse Lake. The preserve offers a 7.3-mile hiking trail, much of which is flat, paved, and shaded by the forest. Since the preserve offers diverse ecosystems and an easily accessible trail system that you can explore at your own pace, you can expect a leisurely and relaxing bird-watching experience.

Birds You Might See

Around 217 bird species have been recorded at Busse Woods, according to eBird. Herons, egrets, and cormorants often gather on the shoreline of Busse Lake. You might find a variety of gulls plus mergansers, grebes, and ducks on the lake as well. In springtime, keep an eye out for colorful warblers in tall trees around the preserve. Look for shorebirds and snow geese heading south for the winter during fall migration. Woodpeckers, nuthatches, raptors, and songbirds can usually be spotted throughout the year. Anytime you go bird watching in Busse Woods, you’ll probably see some interesting species. Make sure you take a field guide to help you with bird identification!

Getting Involved
